A “No-So-Much Book Review: Emotional Intelligence 2.0

I was told very early on in ministry that “Leaders are readers”.  Since that day I have been trying to be the kind of reader that lives up to the leadership I have been gracefully afforded. Most of the time I read books on theology or leadership.  Today I started a new book called emotional intelligence 2.0.  If you’re hoping for a well crafted book review, you may have to look elsewhere.  Most likely I will return to the post more than I have people read this so I am basically using this space to write down things that capture my attention as I read.  If you find what you read here helpful…awesome!  If you find that it’s random and best and has no logical rhyme or reason to it’s format, then congratulations, you are very good at observing reality! 🙂

So here goes nothing!

  • “all emotions are derivations of five core feelings: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and shame.”(Kindle Locations 311-312)
  • “Since our brains are wired to make us emotional creatures, your first reaction to an event is always going to be an emotional one. You have no control over this part of the process. You do control the thoughts that follow an emotion, and you have a great deal of say in how you react to an emotion—as long as you are aware of it.
  • “Emotional intelligence is your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships.”(Kindle Locations 335-337).
  • “personality can’t be used to predict emotional intelligence.”
  • “EQ is so critical to success that it accounts for 58 percent of performance in all types of jobs. It’s the single biggest predictor of performance in the workplace and the strongest driver of leadership and personal excellence.” (Kindle Locations 360-361).
